Some info on whale sharks 🦈
🐋 What is a whale shark?
Despite the name, whale sharks are actually sharks, not whales – and they are the largest fish in the world.
They can grow up to 12–18 metres long (about the length of a bus 😮).
🌍 Where are they found?
They live in warm tropical waters around the world – and the Maldives is one of the best places on Earth to see them because:
• Warm, clear water
• Rich plankton (their food)
• Year-round sightings in certain atolls
😇 Are they dangerous?
Not at all.
Whale sharks are:
• Completely harmless to humans
• Slow-moving and gentle
• Known as the “gentle giants of the ocean”
People regularly swim alongside them safely – it’s calm, surreal and emotional rather than scary.
🐠 What do they eat?
They are filter feeders, meaning they eat:
• Plankton
• Tiny fish
• Krill
They swim with their mouths open, filtering food from the water – which is why you can be so close to them.
🌊 What’s it like to swim with one?
People describe it as:
• “Life-changing”
• “Emotional”
• “The most humbling experience ever”
Imagine floating in crystal-clear water while a spotted giant the size of a coach glides past you in total silence. It’s unreal.
📸 Why are they so famous?
• Their beautiful spotted pattern (each one is unique, like a fingerprint)
• Their sheer size and calm presence
• They are a symbol of rare, once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences
🏝️ Why the Maldives is perfect for it
The Maldives offers:
• Shallow, clear lagoons
• Professional guides
• Strict protection rules (no touching, no chasing)
• Some of the most ethical and responsible encounters in the world
